Project Overview
GMG Corporation was retained to prepare the electrical design package associated with the complete overhaul of a 50+ year old stormwater/wastewater treatment system. Duties included:

  • Prepare Piping & Instrumentation diagrams for the updated treatment scheme
  • Prepare the electrical contractor RFQ, including all supplemental documentation
  • Develop power distribution schematics and ampacity tables for the replacement motor control centers
  • Develop building electrical and lighting design for a new activated carbon treatment building
  • Site oversight during electrical installation
  • Start-up assistance and Training

Design
The upgraded stormwater/wastewater treatment system is controlled via an Allen-Bradley SLC500 PLC with one (1) Remote I/O panel. Rockwell's RSView32 SCADA system software was utilized to provide supervisory control and datalogging capability.

After the project was bid successfully, GMG Corporation was contracted to provide the following components:

  • Motor Control Centers
  • Medium Voltage to Low Voltage Step-Down Transformer and Switchgear
  • Main Control Panel and Remote I/O Panel
  • PLC and SCADA Programming
  • Field Instrumentation

The Solution
This project utilizes Allen-Bradley SLC 500 PLCs and Rockwell Software's RSView32 SCADA software to yield a reliable control system that will function unattended. An autodialer provides remote alarming capacity.

Technologies In Use

  • Allen-Bradley SLC500 PLC Control Platform
  • Rockwell Software RSView32 SCADA System Software
  • High Speed Industrial Ethernet Communications
  • Remote Administration/monitoring via dial-up
  • Autodialer for remote alarm annuciation
  • Square D Motor Control Centers & Switchgear

Benefits
The facility upgrade and new control platform provides for safe, unattended operation of the treatment plant during off hours and weekends. Staff are now able to focus on other duties around the rail yard. A fully automatic flow control/by-pass algorithm prevents flooding even during extreme rain events.
