Project Overview
GMG Corporation was contracted to engineer, fabricate, program, and install a modular skid-based pilot plant for a Municipal Wastewater Authority located in Virginia.
Design
The pilot plant was to be designed as an identical small scale version of the existing Water Treatment Plant, utilizing the same instrumentation and control systems present in the full scale plant. GMG decided for a modular skid based design, to facilitate off-site construction of the treatment modules, and allow for faster on-site installation. Material of construction for the skids and supports was Stainless Steel. The complete pilot system contains the following modules:
CP-1 Control Panel
Influent Module
Flash Mixing/Flocculation Module
Settling Module
IPC Ozonation Feed Module
Ozonation Module
Filtration Module
The Solution
This project showcases a Siemens SIMATIC 545 programmable logic controller interfaced with Ge Fanuc's Cimplicity (iFix) SCADA product. Control network communications are via Ethernet.
Technologies In Use
Siemens SIMATIC 545 Programmable Logic Controller
Ge Fanuc Cimplicity (iFix) SCADA Software
High Speed Ethernet Communications
Chemtrac "Lasertrac" Particle Counters
Ozonation (Water Treatment Process)
Carbon Filtration (Water Treatment Process)
Remote Administration/monitoring via TELCO
Benefits
The end user utilizes the pilot plant for testing and refining new treatment techniques and methodologies prior to implementing them on the full scale plant. Because the pilot plant utilizes the same instrumentation and controls as the full scale plant, it has proven to be an invaluable asset for operator training. The pilot plant is housed in a large two story room with glass walls, and used as a showcase for plant tours.
